This is new for this year and has never been a requirement for novice fencers in this division. Further, USFA rules do not specifically require knickers. I have requested a clarification from the president of the Missoula club regarding this rule. I would like to know if this is an issue for Helena fencers since the club does not own any knickers that we can loan out to members. My personal feeling is that this is unnecessary for novice events and only serves to exclude new fencers from participating in events. If you would like to express your own feelings about this, I invite you to directly contact the president of the Missoula club and let him know what you think. Send email to University of Montana Fencing Club Fencing breeches can be purchased for about $30. "I'm sorry I was unclear as to the definition of "knickers". Long fencing pants will suffice, however, they must meet the 350 newtons rule for USFA tournaments as well as the rule that the Jacket must overlap the knickers/fencing pants by at least 10 cm when the fencer is in on guard. The reason behind change is the fact that the liability insurance we receive from the USFA only covers fencers who are completely outfitted per USFA rules. If a fencer was to be injured while competing wearing sweatpants or jeans, they would not be covered. While I understand that this rule has not been enforced at local tournaments in the past, it was a clear point established at the referee clinic this past summer." What this means: The club will be working to acquire loaner knickers for members who wish to compete in matches. For that reason, it is important that everyone make sure they pay their monthly equipment fee of $10. We have been pretty lax about collecting this, but starting in Oct we will require that club members be current with their fees if they wish to use club equipment. This fee dies not apply to club members who own all their own gear. As always, we will work to accommodate those for whom the equipment fee is a hardship. Contact me directly.
