First, the tournament went well, despite being small. We held it the same weekend as the Pacific Northwest sectionals, and many fencers from our division went to the sectionals. Special thanks to Bozeman, who showed up to support us. Our current arrangement with the YMCA is to split the income from tournaments after expenses. After paying for medals and refreshment, the club wrote a check to the YMCA for $100. Our current bank balance is $341, about half way to our goal of $700 to buy a second set of reels and cables. On the subject of finances, everyone is reminded that if you are not in a paid class and are using club gear, there is a $10 per month gear fee. We use this money to maintain and replace damaged equipment and to buy new gear. At last week's tournament, two foil blades were broken, one of which belonged to the club. You gear fee pays for this equipment. We have been fairly lax about collecting this fee, but we believe that $10 per month is more than reasonable considering the cost of the gear. This gear is purchased and owned by the Helena Fencing Club, not the YMCA. You can pay your gear fee directly to Tod, or to the club via paypal by sending your fee to paypal at helenafencing.org. We are looking at host another one or two matches this summer. We would like to have at least one junior match for younger fencers, and another open tournament. Announcements will be made to this list. Robert Kirkland is currently working to get a club going at Helena High School, and all HHS fencers are encouraged to help. The next beginners classes start Match 18th and 20th. Epee will start March 18 and foil starts March 20th. To make things easier, we are going to focus on foil on Saturdays and epee on Thursdays. Tuesdays will remain open fencing. The beginning classes will be in the first hour on Thursday and Saturday, with intermediate classes to immediately follow. Thanks, Tod From info at helenafencing.org Thu Mar 25 00:58:21 2010 From: info at helenafencing.org (Helena Fencing) Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2010 00:58:21 -0600 Subject: [Fencing] News Message-ID: We have a couple of bits of news regarding the club and class at the YMCA. First, Cara O'Donnell is taking a leave of absence as our epee instructor. I will be replacing her as well as teaching foil. We are going to change the classes and practices slightly given the new staffing. For the immediate future, we will only be offering a beginning class in foil. Fencers who wish to move to epee after completing the basic fencing class (foil) we still be able to do so, however after consulting with several of the members, we decided that a good grounding in foil translates well into epee. As such, we are proposing a new schedule since I cannot teach foil and epee at the same time: Tuesday from 6:15-8:30 will be dedicated to foil (intermediate and advanced). The first hour will be instruction, drills and footwork. The second hour will be devoted to bouting. Paul will be assisting. Beginning students are welcome, but emphasis will be on advanced techniques. Thursday from 6:15-8:30 will be dedicated to epee. Anyone who is 13 or older and has completed a beginning fencing class is welcome. As per foil, the first hour will be devoted to instruction, drills and footwork, and the second hour to bouting. Robert Kirkland will be assisting. Saturday from 10-12 will be devoted to beginners classes (foil). This will give the student more time and they won;t have to compete for space with the advanced fencers. We will keep this schedule until the gym becomes available in the summer. As always, students who have completed a beginners class are welcome to fence at other times and use the club equipment. Due to the cost of the scoring machines and reels, we ask that fencers under 16 have an adult if there is no instructor present before using the electric gear. A few notes about equipment. In February we instituted and equipment fee of $10 per month for members using club equipment. All the fencing gear is provided by and paid for by the Helena Fencing Club. We receive no funding from the YMCA. Please remember to pay your monthly equipment fee. I will be sending out reminders monthly to those who have gear checked out. We are missing a size 40 foil lame. Please check to make sure you didn't accidentally take it home. We only have a few lames and they are expensive ($65) to replace. Our current bank balance is about $20. However, we greatly expanded our equipment this year. In February we got a Favero scoring box ($850) and last week added another pair of Favero reels ($750) giving us two complete electric strips. We need to buy a couple more foil lames, and the equipment fees from the current beginners class should cover this. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or call. I'd like to propose an alternative schedule as well, and let the club members decide Choice 1: Tuesday Foil from 6:15-8:30 Thursday Epee from 6:15-830 Choice : Tuesday Foil from 6:15-7:15, Epee 7:30-8:30 Thursday Foil from 6:15-7:15, Epee 7:30-8:30 Let me know what you think via email or in person.
