The class fee is in lieu of regular membership. All equipment will be provided by the club. Regular practice will begin 6 October 2006 at the PAL alternative High school gym (Lincoln School). The school is on Poplar street behind the mountain West Bank on Montana and Cedar. Practice will be on Monday and Wednesday from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Actual classes and fencing will start at 6:30, so people will have a chance to get dressed and stretch out. I hope to start the first formal class "Introduction to fencing" by mid october. I will be having surgery on the 8th of October so formal classes may be delayed. We will still have basic lessons. We hope to be expanding our classes to include intermediate foil fencing, introduction to the epee and intermediate epee. For those who are interested in competition, there will be a USFA sanctioned fencing match on Oct 25 in Bozeman. The club will have 3 members participating in the match, and it's a chance a fencing match in person. We will have club signups on Oct 6 and 8 and will be getting measurements from everyone who will be taking the class so that we can order gloves and other equipment as needed. See you there. Starting Monday, we will be meeting Mondays and Wednesdays at the Lincoln School (PAL) gym. This week we will be finalizing some club detail as well as doing some fencing. The first class will start officially on 13 October and will last 8 weeks. Classes on Monday repeat on Wednesday, so if you miss one day, you can make it up, or do both days for additional practice. The cost of the class is $40 plus a $10 glove fee. You get to keep the glove. The club will provide weapons masks and jackets. You are welcome to purchase you own glove if you wish, and won't have to pay the glove fee. Regular membership fee is $15 per month, plus a $10 equipment fee per month if you are using club equipment. This covers out insurance and wear and tear on the gear. If you are taking the class, you don't need to pay the membership fee that 8 weeks. If you are a playing member of the club, any classes offered will be without charge unless we are paying a professional coach to teach. As we get into advanced fencing techniques, we hope to arrange for a professional coach to work with the members who are interested in advanced techniques or competition. What to bring: As a beginner, you should show up for class in comfortable work out clothes. A Tee shirt and sweat or running pants (no bare legs please) and comfortable non-slip, non-marking sole shoes. Court shoes, basketball shoes, racquetball shoes and the like are idea (and of course fencing shoes). I don't know if there's a drinking fountain, so we will bring bottled water. You may also wish to bring a towel. In order to participate in fencing, you should be able to do moderate exercise. You will be required to sign a health an liability waiver. People under 18 will need a parent or guardian signature. I will have the forms available Monday night, and will also post them on the web site. Let me know if you have any questions. We really don't have room for anyone new at this point, but we should be starting another beginning class in December. I am going to see if we can get another day - probably Thurs - so that we can reserve at least one day strictly for bouting and advanced training for our more experienced fencers. I will be discussing this tonight and next monday. Several people have expressed a problem with Wednesday nights, so we may move classes to Mon, Thursday, and use Wednesday for bouting depending on what everyone thinks. We may also want to think about doing something on the weekend, provided we can find a venue. This week you will get to hear about the Bozeman match. We all had a good time. Alex won a couple of matches fencing against primarily college aged fencers in the novice foil. Katie and Taryn had fun but faced some stiff competition. Katie ended up fencing all 'rated' fencers with years of experience, including one of the top competitors in the division. She managed to get in a couple of touches, which was quite an accompishment. Taryn will not be available Monday night, so after footwork drills, the epee fencers will be doing some one on one bouting. For foil student: This week we are going to cover the ripost and 'right of way'. The latter is a difficult concept but it's understanding is essential to foil and saber fencing. Included in right of way is tempo, preparation and the fencing phrase. Don;t worry, it will all make sense. As usual, we will try to get in a little bouting at the end of the evening. I will also be doing some one on one instruction as time allows.
