Last week we got this mailing list and the web site set up, and I plan on sending our a regular report on the state of thing to let everyone know how we are doing. We have a couple of new member this week, and I'd like to extend a welcome. Please fee free to post to the list with any questions or comments, or just to introduce yourself. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Tod Glenn and I am 45 years old. I fenced in college, and later (up until 3 years ago) I fenced epee at the NW fencing center in Portland OR. I've always been a recreational rather than a competition fencer, although I did some competing while in college. After moving to Helen 3 years ago I took another break, but have decided to try and organize a fencing club here in Helena. Where we are at today: Last week we started posting circulars around town and I have been talking to several organizations about hosting the club. I am still waiting to here from the YMCA, and there are a couple of other possible venues were are exploring. We have also been accumulating equipment for a future class. I expect to take delivery of more weapons and equipment this week, including some electric gear. I am in contact with several clubs and we may get some donation. We continue with fencing in the park on Tues, Thurs, and Saturday, and last Saturday we had a new face (Liz) who got her first lesson in foil. I am still hoping to hear from more former fencers so we can expand our instructors beyond me. That's about it for this week. I'll be updating the web site with more information, more photos and other information as time allows. In the meantime, please feel free to use this list to chat with other fencers, or people interested in fencing. Newcomers are more than welcome! Also, please let other people know what we are up to. As you may know I am in the process of collecting gear for the club. It would be helpful to hear from those of you who don't have gear. If possible, could you send me the following What weapon? Sex Right of left handed Mask size Glove size Jacket size If you don't know your sizes, here's how to get them Glove: Measure around your hand at the widest point (usually right behind the knuckle) and add 1/2 inch. Mask: Measure around your head at the ears, under the chin and over the top of your head. Jacket: Measure around you chest under the breast, add 4 inches You may wish to look at this web page for more sizing info. http://shop.fencing.net/Articles.asp?ID=108 Right now I have several foils, including 4 electric, several epees including 2 electric and a couple of sabers. A couple are LH, the rest are right. I also have a half dozen masks and a similar number of jackets. We are still looking for a location for fencing. I have spoken with Salvation Army and it looks like they are heavily booked. I am waiting to hear from the YMCA and crossroads fitness. If you know of any other places that might be willing to host the fencing club, please let me know. You can email info at helenafencing.net or call me at 461-7283 Based on input from several people, I am thinking of Tuesday and Thursday night, and Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I would be more than happy to instruct a beginners class in foil to get all the non- fencers started or to refresh you memories. Right now I have a dozen practice foil, half a dozen masks and 16 jackets on the way. I still need to get a selection of gloves. Those of you who don't have equipment, please get in contact with me and let me know your sizes. I have more gear coming, but need to get an idea where to fill in. To date, I have about: 10 practice foils, most French right, and a couple of French left and a couple of right orthopedics 6 electric foils, R & L French and a couple of ortho 4 practice epees and 4 electric - all right handed, most ortho 2 practice sabers I have a dozen gloves or so, right and left, and 8 masks of varying sizes (sm, med, lg) arriving 5 Sept I also have a number of personal masks (5 or so) that may be made available to the club. We have about 7 functional jackets We also have about 15 older jackets in need of some repair. Some have minor staining and most are missing a few buttons. If you would like to help out sewing buttons on jackets let me know. There are 11 or so buttons per jacket, and they need to be well stitched. I am waiting to hear back from a couple of schools about using their gyms. As things stand, we should we ready to roll i the next couple of weeks. Still left to be done: We need to formally form the club ad adopt a set of by-laws, elect officers, set up a bank account, determine dues, etc. I am going to see about getting a meeting room at the library. With luck we will only need one or two business meetings per year.
