Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
| How much does it cost?
The Helena Fencing Club is supported by the Helena YMCA. The monthly fee for membership is free for YMCA members and $30/month for non-YMCA members. There is an 8 week beginning class in foil or epee. Class fee is $30 for YMCA members and $65 for non-members. In addition, there is a $10 monthly fee for equipment payable to the Helena Fencing club for members that are using club gear. Members who own their on gear are exempt from this fee. How do I join? The club meets Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30-8:30PM and Saturday 10:00AM-12:00PM at the Helena YMCA at 1200 Last Chance Gulch. Contact the YMCA at (406) 442-9622 or drop by any pratice. What gear do I need to start fencing? The Helena Fencing Club has loaner gear, and we suggest that people trying fencing for the first time wait before they purchase personal equipment. To practice, wear comfortable pants that cover the leg, a light shirt such as a tee shirt, and comforatble shoes with a non-marking sole. If I want to buy my own gear, what should I get? If you plan on buying your own gear, we suggest that you consult with one of the coaches. At the minimum, we suggest an approved 6000N rated mask, jacket, glove and weapon. Women ashould also puchase a breast protector, and an under-arm protector or plastron will reduce bruising. Many fencing gear suppliers offer starter sets at a discounted price. See the 'links' page for vendors. We are focusing on competition, so if you think you might be interested in competing, we recommend you buy an electric weapon. We strongly recommend you buy a plastron (underarm protector). These can be purchased for as little as $15. If you are considering competing in a USFA match, you mst be a USFA member ($60 per year). USFA match rules require that you have two electric weapons and two body cords, as well as a jacket, plastron and knee or ankle length pants. Women are also required to have a breast protector. Foil fencers will need a lamé as well. The club has a very limited amount of electric gear to loan out for matches. When ordering an electric weapon, we recommend a German point for epee, and a British (Leon Paul) or German point for foil. How much does basic gear cost? A starter set for fencing will generally run between $125-175 depending on the weapon. Electric weapons, which are required for competition, are generally more expensive. Like any sport, the cost of gear depends on what you buy, and you can easily spend a great deal of money on the top of the line equipment. In general, this is not necessary for domestic (non-FIE) competition. What weapons do you teach? We are currently teaching foil and epee. Do you have beginner classes? The club offers beginning classes in foil and epee throughout the year. The classes are typically 6-8 weeks long and there is a flat fee for the class which is in lieu of regular dues. In addition, we have individualized coaching between classes. Check the web site for class dates. |
